Hear Back on Display at "Digital Workstations:
From the Garage to the GRAMMYs"
Marin County, California - On July
19, 2003, a capacity crowd of studio pros, home engineers, and artists
flocked to "Digital Workstations: From the Garage to the GRAMMYs."
Held on the Scoring Stage at Skywalker Sound, the San Francisco
Chapter featured intimate professional demonstrations of the top
digital workstations on the market and 20 pro-audio manufacturers
exhibiting their latest products.
Engineers
Phil Tan (Alicia Keys, Usher) on Digidesigns Pro Tools, Larry
Seyer (Asleep At The Wheel, Dixie Chicks) on Steinbergs Nuendo
system, and Jean-Marie Horvat (Jennifer Lopez, N Sync) on
Emagics Logic Platinum system revealed their creative and
technical approaches to mixing. In addition to treating the audience
to samples of their work from Usher, Ray Benson, Suzy Bogguss, and
a preview of a brand new Aretha Franklin song, The Only Thing
Missin," the three engineers were given an unreleased
track by Egyptian pop artist Hakim, with guest vocals by James Brown.
Each engineer spent an hour mixing the track on the spot, and the
results were exciting illustrations of their very different engineering
styles.
Exhibitors included representatives from Antares, Apogee, Apple
Computer, Cakewalk, C-Tec, Digidesign, Dynaudio, Emagic, Guitar
Center Pro, Hear Technologies, KRK Systems,
Mackie, Microtech Gefell, Monster Cable, Presonus, Shure, Tannoy,
TC Electronic, Universal Audio, and Waves.
